How an In-Home Washer and Dryer Lightened the Load and Increased Jordan’s Self-Sufficiency
September 23, 2025

A look at how the Denver Mill Levy Program supported a young man’s self-sufficiency and life skills development through the purchase of a washer and dryer.
Jordan, a young man in his mid-twenties with an intellectual and developmental disability (I/DD), lives with his mother in Denver. Bright, kind, and invested in helping at home, Jordan takes pride in finding new ways to be more independent and support his mom.
Until recently, Jordan and his mother had to visit a nearby laundromat a couple times each week to do their laundry, which was time-consuming and took away time from other activities and responsibilities. However, this chore has become simpler and less time-intensive with the support of the Denver Mill Levy Program, which helped Jordan and his mom purchase an in-home washer and dryer.
Jordan was involved in the entire process of getting these appliances. He browsed the Home Depot website to compare options, ultimately deciding that a stacked washer and dryer would be the best fit for their space. When the installers arrived, Jordan didn’t just watch, he pitched in by asking questions, lending a hand and learning how the appliances work.
Now, Jordan does his own laundry whenever he needs, no trips to the laundromat required. For Jordan, learning to manage his own laundry means more freedom in his daily routine, an increase in his self-sufficiency, and the chance to share responsibilities at home. Each load equates to more than just clean clothes: it’s confidence, pride, and one more way he’s building life skills that will serve him for years to come.
