Making Waves: Pearl Builds Confidence One Swim Lesson at a Time
June 19, 2025

A look at how the Denver Mill Levy Program helped a Denver family access swim lessons that boosted their daughter’s water safety skills, improved her focus, and sparked a new sense of confidence.
The Denver Mill Levy Program recently supported a local family in accessing swimming lessons for their 10-year-old daughter, Pearl. Pearl has an intellectual and developmental disability (I/DD) and previously lacked vital water safety awareness. She also had a hard time controlling her breath underwater and putting her head below the water.
But shortly after the Denver Mill Levy Program supported her family in accessing membership to the Wheat Ridge Recreation Center, Pearl’s new favorite activity quickly became swimming.
“She went from not knowing how to control her breath underwater to swimming confidently like a fish,” her mother shared. “Pearl has gained immense confidence in the water and is a force in that pool now!”
In addition to Pearl’s swim lessons, her family now uses the pool to host her occupational therapy sessions. Conducting occupational therapy next to the pool has increased Pearl’s commitment and drive during these sessions, minimizing the number of times she gets distracted.
It’s been a pleasure to support Pearl and her family, and their experience highlights the meaningful impact that swimming lessons can have for children with I/DD. With the right support, Pearl has not only developed important water safety skills but also grown in confidence, focus, and determination both in and out of the pool.
